The First and Second Continental Congresses
and
the Declaration of Independence
When the colonial delegates met in September 1774 in Philadelphia, it became known as the First Continental Congress. Their purpose at that time was to get King George III to change his policies and give them greater authority in their own governing. When that didn’t happen, these men would meet again in May 1775 at the same place in the same town. This Second Continental Congress would have an entirely different purpose, to separate from the rule of Great Britain and become an independent nation.
It was during the Second Continental Congress that Thomas Jefferson and a committee of others would develop the Declaration of Independence. This document provides a long list of abuses by King George III to the colonists and explains their course of action in declaring their independence from British rule.
