Racial Tensions
In the nineteenth century, the Irish and the blacks existed together. They were immediately pushed into competition, but they didn’t have a good economic and social status. But as time passed, they each excelled in sports, entertainment, religion, politics, and writing and publishing. Even though they were competitive with each other, they both thought they were unfairly treated in the workforce. The blacks were prohibited from dangerous work; they were treated as valuable property because they were slaves.
The Irish, on the other hand, had dangerous jobs.
They had no protection at all and most of the lives lost were because that they worked at building the canals and railroad systems. Then, during the Civil War time period, the Conscription Act of 1863 allowed white men with the ages of twenty and forty five to be eligible for a draft in the Union Army. Free blacks could be drafted if they wanted to be, but other then that blacks were not forced to fight or drafted. The white men could hire a substitute, pay a commutation of a draft or illegally bribe a doctor for medical exemptions. In some cities, there were draft riots and only enrollment officers and blacks were targeted for the violence.
On June 11th, 1863, the biggest incident happened; it was in New York City. More than one hundred people were murdered by an upset mob. The mob burnt down draft offices and was attacking police officers and whites. The mob was a class of lower white, they were mainly Irish, and their attacks were focused on the blacks.
This all happened because of inequality of the draft eligibility between blacks, whites, lower-class white who were Irish, which increased the racial tension badly.
Another instance started in Reno, Nevada at Hug high school. A series of fights between blacks and Hispanics were happening frequently. There was a Mexican flag torn down and thrown into the bathroom. After that, several fights broke out. Seven students were arrested and parents were complaining about racial strife.
As the days passed, there were a lot of interracial fights. On November 8th, black and Hispanic people were in two separate battles on the streets of Wilmer Amina Carter high school. Not two days later, another interracial fight broke out on the campus and there was even a fight in the lunchroom, it left fifty-seven of the students injured. Twenty police officers broke up a bunch of street fights between blacks and Hispanics. There was a riot in San Jacinto that involved blacks and Hispanic students.
There were three arrests, six suspensions and a lockdown of 1,700 students. About five hundred students were involved in the fight and it didn’t help when parents were shouting racial comments and egging their kids on to continue the fight. They were just adding more fuel to the fire. It is said many blacks hate when they see Hispanics jumping to the socioeconomic ladder.Hispanics also say that they are treated in racist ways by blacks and the main conflict is legal and illegal Hispanics are pouring into black neighborhoods.
A lot of blacks say that the Hispanics will not hire blacks into their businesses. The Hispanics are targeted for robbery by some blacks who pick undocumented workers. Those groups of people are not likely to call it into the police. Right now, both blacks and Hispanics worry about the blacks in 2002, of the displacement as the largest minority in America for the first time. There were a lot of minor fights, robberies and some Hispanics were shot.
Two people were murdered and eight people got shot. There was an election between James Hahn and Ervin ‘Magic’ Johnson. Hahn won with fifty nine percent of the votes and ninety percent were blacks. As that went on, parents and students held a non violence forum at the school and they all pledged to work for peace. In the 1920s, jazz was a new thing; it had positive and negative consequences.
It was the culture of African Americans. Their culture became the desire of the American culture. White jazz musicians stated that jazz was not originally African, though it was. They just named the Original Dixieland Jazz Band as the creator.Jazz had respect from literary figures and classical musicians.
African Americans had respect and dignity that they had once been deprived of. But also, African Americans were showing up in the North and South with their movements. They gathered power, sympathetic supporters and representatives. There were also race riots and strikes that infuriated the white supremacist groups. There were also new laws that made life hard for the African Americans and most fled to the north.
After that, the African Americans started protesting against their unfair treatment. This is where the Ku Klux Klan comes in and they posted an article proclaiming that all Catholics, Jews, African Americans were not real Americans and they were a problem. The Klan started gaining a lot of support, getting up to four million members. They were very controversial until the 1960s.With the African American jazz music coming into America, making racial tensions grow strongly, it helped pave the way for the Equal Rights Movement in the 1960s.
