New Nationalism
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was sworn into presidency on May 4, 1933.His inaugural speech which could have been titled “the new nationalism”. It was almost the same as his cousin Theodore Roosevelt, who used the expression first. New Nationalism was a campaign plan that called for a strong government that could regulate industry, protect the middle class and the working class, and carry out national projects. He started speaking about a New Deal that would eventually come along.
Franklin only wanted a doctrine of federal centralization at first. He also wanted nationalization of politics. This was after the New Deal, which started the principle activism that acted as the dividing line in the American politics. But supposedly the New Deal became biased against the “forgotten man at the bottom of the economic pyramid.” The New Deal was a redistribution of power.
Then came along new urban and class politics, replacing old rustic and sectional politics. In fact, Franklin wanted to make the executive power stronger then the power of the Congress, which that could be a bad thing. He appreciated power. He went along with New Nationalism, which as said above, Theodore Roosevelt started doing. New Nationalism went against Woodrow Wilson’s New Freedom.
Wilson’s New Freedom was started when Wilson grew had respect for Thomas Jefferson. Wilson liked the idea when Jefferson came up with agrarian utopia of small farmers that were educated. His idea New Freedom would attack the tariff, banks, and the trusts, which was known as The Triple Wall of Privilege. The thing about New Nationalism though, it limited ships for the Navy. But it also had two new battleships built each year.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt was in his third term of office when World War Two was starting up. Nazi Germany invaded the Soviet Union and he provided military and financial support. Pearl Harbor happened in December of that year, and the United States started taking up allies to end the war. Franklin was part of war strategies by the Big Three. The Big Three were Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill.
He also gave financial and diplomatic support to China and Britain to defeat Japan and the Nazi Germany. He is known for the attacks on Japan and Germany in the Pearl Harbor attack. His ideology was “a little left of center.” Franklin also had illness during his time of presidency. He was complaining about lower back pain after he fell off of his yacht.
He went swimming the next day, hoping he could swim it off. But eventually, his legs felt weak and then he couldn’t hold himself up anymore. He started seeing a bunch of doctors, and one Dr. Keen suggested that he have lumbar massages daily. But all of that was caused by a spinal lesion. The massages continued, but it didn’t help how Roosevelt felt; paralyzed.
Then he was diagnosed with polio at the age of 39. In 1921, Franklin decided he wanted to go to his rehabilitation center. And swimming helped. He got his nervous system working correctly, his arms regained strength and his stomach and lower back was getting stronger. He eventually got braces to help him walk shortly.
became interested in Warm Springs, Georgia, where he knew he could get healed of his polio. Unfortunately, it was going to shut down, so he bought for 200,000 dollars for polio victims like himself. One day, he was signing letters and documents there. As an artist was painting him on their portrait, he felt a sharp pain in the side of his
head. He was suffering a cerebral hemorrhage and he would die in minutes. After slipping into a coma, Franklin Delano Roosevelt died on April 12th, 1945.
